There’s a particular kind of crowd energy that tells you the stage is no longer enough. When Mr. Tirthankar Patnaik, Chief Economist at NSE, walked in, the audience didn’t just fill the seats — they started standing along the aisles. I leaned in and said, “Sir, I have a complaint — you’ve caused a stampede.” That line landed. But what landed even more was what followed: patience, curiosity, and a public eager for more. As an emcee in Mumbai, you learn to work with different formats. But you never get used to moments where the crowd won’t stop arriving.

The art of anchoring institutional humility

At one point, I asked Dr. Patnaik to name a quality he identified in childhood that hinted at this future. His answer? “No, no, I’m just a middle-class boy who studied hard.” He didn’t elaborate, so I did it for him: “Sir, I’ll take the liberty — you are humble.” The audience chuckled. But what really moved them was his refusal to self-glorify. In an era of overstatement, this was an understated lesson. It’s also a reminder of what audiences actually respond to — especially when you’re positioned as a corporate emcee tasked with handling both institutional gravity and light cultural wit.

This was my second time anchoring at Money Expo India. And like last year, the NSE session created a magnetism of its own. People entered mid-session and chose to stand through the rest. There were no empty exits. Just heads craning forward, trying to catch every word.
